From Sketch to Stitch: Mice and Marshmallows Embroidery
This embroidery captures a quiet nighttime scene of mice gathered around a campfire with marshmallows.
Follow the journey of this piece as the mice, branches, glowing fire, and sparkling night sky gradually come to life from the first sketch.
On deep navy fabric, softly colored mice appear around a glowing campfire. Sequins, beads, and fine gold thread are layered throughout the branches, flames, and night sky to create a gentle sparkle.
Rather than deciding every detail at the beginning, the scene gradually developed through stitching, layering materials, and discovering the balance of colors and textures along the way.
1. Sketching Out the Idea
The first step was to bring the image in my mind onto paper.
At this stage, some details were intentionally left open, allowing the design to grow naturally as the embroidery progressed.
2. Stitching the Mice and Branches
Little by little, the shapes of the mice began to appear on the fabric.
The branches became the next area to explore, with the idea of adding colorful sequins to create tiny lights glowing in the night.
3. Exploring the Campfire Design
The campfire slowly began to take shape as different sequins were placed and rearranged to find the right balance.
By layering sequins in various colors and sizes, the warm movement of the flames gradually emerged.
4. Adding Depth to the Branches
The branches were refined with different shades of thread, adding depth and making the shapes feel more natural.
Small changes in color throughout the surrounding branches helped create a sense of space within the entire scene.
5. Balancing the Overall Composition
The placement of the sequins for the campfire was becoming clearer.
While considering the branch held by the mouse, the overall composition continued to develop through small adjustments.
Final Step
After completing the mice, marshmallows, campfire, and branches, beads and fine gold thread were added across the night sky to finish the scene.
Details that were left open in the original sketch gradually found their place as the threads, sequins, and beads came together.
